Sarah Hurwitz worked in the Obama administration, first as a speechwriter for President Barack Obama and then as head speechwriter for first lady Michelle Obama. After her time in the administration and a bad breakup, she set out on a five-year discovery of Judaism after years of disengagement. She wrote a compelling book: “Here All Along: Finding Meaning, Spirituality, and a Deeper Connection to Life — in Judaism (After Finally Choosing to Look There).” Our conversation below was edited lightly for length and style.
